Metropolitan Council / Agency grants boost projects

The Metropolitan Council on Wednesday approved almost $6 million in local development grants to kick-start projects from Roseville to Rosemount. The so-called "Livable Communities" grants annually fund pilot redevelopment projects around the Twin Cities. The Met Council received about $18.4 million in requests this year but funded only seven of 16 prospective projects. The largest grant will fund redevelopment of downtown Rosemount. That city's Stonebridge Core Block East project got $1.6 million in grants to help pay for the controversial $18 million redevelopment effort. The city had threatened to use eminent domain to acquire part of the land but reached a sale agreement for the last parcel Monday.
