Voters OK partial bond request for renovations and additions

Voters in St. Anthony-New Brighton School District approve one out of four ballot questions in special election. Schools in the St. Anthony-New Brighton School District will see some upgrades after a $11.5 million bond request was approved by voters in a special election Tuesday. But $15.3 million in other projects were turned down. The results were 1,445 voting yes for the first question on the ballot -- the $11.5 million request -- and 1,340 voting no. Question One was for a maintenance overhaul, targeting "everything from roofing projects to tile work," said St. Anthony-New Brighton Superintendent Rod Thompson. Other projects included renovating school kitchens, fixing up restrooms, and renovating science rooms and computer labs. The other three questions on the ballot failed. Voters needed to approve the first question to approve any of the others. Projects covered by the other three requests included adding gym space and relocating and enlarging the band and choir buildings at the middle school and high school, which share a building.
