No way around it: Growth is coming to Lake Elmo

The issue that has been simmering in Lake Elmo for 12 years is coming to a boil April 1. That's when the City Council will decide whether the 250-home downtown is going to be three times bigger â€" or seven times bigger. There's no dispute about the intensity of the rancor. "April Fool's Day will make sense for that meeting," said former Mayor Susan Dunn, who wants to minimize growth in the Old Village redevelopment. She has charged the City Council with forcing what she calls excessive growth into the downtown area. But Mayor Dean Johnston said the city must move forward with the plan that has split the city for years. "There is an incredibly hostile environment around here," he said. "No one wants to say anything â€" they will get pounced on."
