Rail officials, St. Paul reach deal on key land for future transit hub
Ramsey County rail officials and the St. Paul Housing and Redevelopment Authority have reached a deal for land on the eastern edge of downtown that the county wants in its effort to turn Union Depot into a transportation hub. The Regional Rail Authority would pay $3.62 million for the nine acres that border Broadway Street and curve east below Kellogg Boulevard, according to the purchase agreement. The land is east of the concourse on the rear of Union Depot, which the county sees as an integral piece of mass transit operations in the Twin Cities. It's the county's preferred terminus of the Central Corridor light-rail line, which would run from Minneapolis to St. Paul and is set to get rolling in 2014. It could also open up the depot to Amtrak, high-speed rail from Chicago, commuter bus lines and even bicycles.
