Afton's controlled-growth ordinance killed by City Council
A contentious ordinance in Afton that was designed to preserve open space but also allow for clusters of housing has come to an end. The City Council, on a 3-2 vote, repealed the 2006 ordinance Wednesday. Factions in Afton, a rural Washington County city of fewer than 3,000 residents, have debated how much development is too much. Residents in favor of the ordinance had argued that it was the only way to preserve open space while allowing inevitable housing growth that is pushing at the fringes of the metro area. Opponents had said it would invite the type of rapid growth seen in neighboring Woodbury.
