Star Tribune eyes $2.5 million slash to newsroom budget
The Star Tribune will cut its newsroom budget by 10 percent, or about $2.5 million, Editor Nancy Barnes told employees in a meeting today, according to a newsroom employee who asked not to be named because the information was supposed to be kept confidential. The cuts, which are expected to be made soon, are in response to the worsening financial position of the Minneapolis-based paper and pressures on the newspaper business. A Star Tribune spokesman declined to comment. The announcement comes at the beginning of negotiations between the Star Tribune and the Newspaper Guild. The paper's contract with the union expires July 31.
