Ramsey County plans to move hundreds of workers from ex-West facility in St. Paul
One of St. Paul's largest employers â" Ramsey County â" is aiming to kick out most of its employees. County commissioners Tuesday approved a new deal to sell its downtown St. Paul riverfront offices to Opus Northwest for $10 million. Under the new deal, Opus will spend no more than another six months seeking an anchor tenant. Whether Opus succeeds or fails in its attempt to find a tenant to anchor the financing for its vision of redeveloping the site, part of the deal â" and the county's plan â" is to move all its workers out of the site, which includes the former West Publishing building. Nothing is definite, but the county is moving ahead with plans to move 677 workers â" at an estimated cost of about $40 million â" no sooner than June 30, 2009, and no later than June 30, 2010. That's 677 workers who will be looking for cubicles, computer networks or easy access to either the public or other branches of government.
