Democrats propose $1.7 billion more for schools

Democrats today outlined a new way to fund Minnesota schools รข€" a plan that would pump an extra $1.7 billion into education starting in 2010 and reduce local property taxes. The stated goal is to create a simplified, balanced and fair way to fund schools across the state. The plan would reduce some of the burden on local taxpayers by providing $600 million in property tax relief. "For the first time, we're actually providing enough money to fairly fund the needs of every student and every district, so they can meet the academic expectations we set for them," said Rep. Mindy Greiling of Roseville, who chairs the House K-12 Finance Committee.
