Lake Elmo council to decide scope of housing study

A proposal to study adding 600 to 1,600 houses and apartments in downtown Lake Elmo seems likely to pass the City Council. At a meeting Tuesday, the council is scheduled to decide the range of new homes to be built in the Old Village redevelopment. The impact of that growth will be studied in an environmental review called an alternative urban areawide review. A majority of the council â€" Mayor Dean Johnston and Council Members Anne Smith and Liz Johnson â€" lean toward studying a range of choices up to the addition of 1,600 units. "The council is simply being smart by gathering data," Smith said. "What amenities will you have with 600? With 1,600? What problems will you have? I have no preference right now â€" I just want answers." Council Member Nicole Park said she hasn't made up her mind, and Steve DeLapp favors studying only the addition of 600 units.
