Legislation alters levy language on ballots
It's not easy to ask taxpayers to maintain or increase local funding for schools. And school district officials say it's even more difficult when the wording on the ballot doesn't accurately describe what you're asking for. Anytime a district holds a referendum on a levy â" even if it just renews current funding â" it is required to put this language on the ballot: "By voting 'yes' on this ballot question, you may be voting for a property tax increase." Some Minnesota lawmakers are trying to change that. A bill making its way through the Legislature would allow school districts asking for a levy renewal to use this phrase: "By voting 'yes' on this ballot question, you are renewing an existing property tax referendum. You are not changing your operating referendum from its level in the previous year."
