Bonding, transportation at top of legislators' to-do lists
Minnesota lawmakers - rife with agendas, conflicts, personalities and spectacles - will return to the Capitol on Tuesday to begin this year's legislative session. Legislators also will keep busy tackling some serious issues. At the top of their agenda is trying once again to find the will and a way to pump more money into the state's congested, deteriorating roads and bridges and underperforming bus and rail transit systems. They also plan to pass a statewide building-construction measure that likely will infuse about $1 billion into bricks and mortar. Lawmakers also hope to reform health care, support renewable-energy projects, pass a constitutional amendment for outdoors funding and help victims of the Interstate 35W bridge collapse. Democratic lawmakers, who are in charge in the House and Senate, hope to control their often-rocky relationship with Gov. Tim Pawlenty and run a smooth session ending on time in May. Republican lawmakers hope to stop Democrats from passing anything they see as destructive.
