Longtime mayor gets help from his humility, wit
Bill Sandberg of North St. Paul, on the job for 29 years, is a throwback to the days when politics happened over coffee and pie in the VFW hall. ... On a recent afternoon, Sandberg sat in his office, simply decorated with two flags, photographs of City Hall, and a photograph of North St. Paul native son and National Hockey League player Bret Hedican. Noticeably absent are photographs of himself shaking hands with important people, plaques and other self-important memorabilia. That doesn't surprise people such as Kevin Frazell, member services director at the League of Minnesota Cities. He said old-school leaders such as Sandberg are often more civic-minded and less individualistic and partisan than many politicians today. That may also be a reason for Sandberg's staying power, he said. [emphasis added]
