Property taxes to increase again in Scott County
Scott County Board members OK'd a tax hike made necessary, they said, by some long-delayed improvements. The Scott County Board approved another substantial increase in taxes Tuesday in what is already the metro area's second most heavily taxed suburban county. Board members argued that they are being forced to make vital investments after years of neglect. "Years ago that levy was pounded down way too low," said Commissioner Joe Wagner. "We're suffering for it now." Commissioner Jerry Hennen agreed. "Earlier boards wanted [above all] to cut taxes. We stepped up to the plate." The board approved total property taxes of $56.3 million, an increase of 8.7 percent. The owner of a home worth $297,600, the county's average, will pay an additional $32, or 3.5 percent. The county's total levy has risen by roughly 10 percent for the past three years after a 5.4-percent increase in 2004.
