Health care squeeze puts property tax to shame

Star Tribune Thu, 20 Dec 2007 05:34:28 GMT
Health care takes hefty bite out of Minnesotans' incomes

Almost 1.1 million Minnesotans can expect to spend more than 10 percent of their pretax incomes next year on health care. For a quarter of those, the cost will be even higher: more than 25 percent of pretax incomes. ... According to the health department's research, premiums rose from $2,060 on average per person in 2000 to $3,462 per person in 2006. At the same time, out-of-pocket costs rose from $221 on average per person to $562 per person in 2006. "Quality health care is just out of reach for far too many families," said U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum, D-Minn., after the report's findings were announced. "Even those with insurance are going to start filing for bankruptcy."
