3M to discuss removing chemicals from soil

The 3M Corp. is hosting a meeting tonight in Oakdale to unveil various proposals to remove chemicals from soil at a former disposal site. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at the Skyview Middle School, 1100 Heron Ave. An informal session to examine posters, maps and diagrams will be from 6 to 7 p.m. and continue after the meeting. The chemicals are perfluorochemicals, or PFCs, manufactured by 3M for use in Teflon, Scotchguard stain repellant and other products. They were disposed of in landfills, and some of them leached into drinking water in much of Washington County, including Woodbury, Cottage Grove, Oakdale and Lake Elmo. On May 22, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency ordered 3M to assess the public health risks of remaining PFCs in three former dump sites in Washington County. The company was ordered to suggest ways of cutting those risks and to communicate the results to the public. Company spokesman Bill Nelson said tonight's meeting is the first step in seeking public reaction to various proposals for reducing PFCs in soil. "It's about peace of mind," Nelson said.
